About Me:
Hello! I'm Mary Yerkes, a writer, speaker, and editor who specializes in writing nonfiction for the inspirational and general markets. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 1997, I serve hurting people, offering encouragement, comfort and hope through the written and spoken word. What I hope to gain from this network...
I hope to learn from and contribute to other individuals and ministries addressing the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of those suffering with illness, disability, or life challenges.
Best Recommended Resource and Why
Apart from God's Word, it is very difficult to choose a "best recommended resource." There are several excellent resources that come to mind--Phillip Yancey's Disappointment with God, Ann Graham Lotz's Why, and Kathleen Lewis' Celebrate Life, to name just a few. However, if forced to choose just one, I would recommend The One Year Book of Hope by Nancy Guthrie. Guthrie offers hope--and help--for the long journey through grief and pain. The readings are short, to the point, and compassionate, written by someone who has experienced unimaginable pain but remains strong in her faith.
Have you heard of Rest Ministries or HopeKeepers?
Absolutely!

Focus on the Family Web Module on Chronic Illness

I just received an email from an editor I've worked with at Focus on the Family. A few weeks ago, I pitched an idea of doing a web module (five articles) on the topic of chronic illness for their website at www.family.org. They've recently redone their website and added a new section, Life Challenges. They would like to proceed with the module!

Please keep me covered in prayer as I move forward on this assignment. I've been struggling physically for several weeks now, and I've got two… Continue

Hi Mary! I too am a spirit-filled believer and the Lord is really driving me into a desert of overwhelming silence. Sometimes when I read my bible or my journals and look at all my notes, it is like the pages are mocking me because my life is so far removed from those places of abundance. In spite of previous difficult challenges, I always felt the Lord's guidance and presence. It was thrilling and vibrant. Now, Jesus is so quiet! I know that He is there, and when I have hit rock-bottom He comforts me, but I feel such a loss of His presence! That, on top of the isolation and stripping away of seemingly everything, can be unbearable. The temptation to give up is always there, but like the psalmist says, "where else can I go?" The other day I was talking to Jesus and moaning and groaning, and when I was finished I had to laugh because I think I had quoted a whole psalm! Some days I just don't want to be (spiritually) mature. God bless! Sandra

Hi Mary, I just left a message, but I'm still new at this and I'm not sure if this is the better format. I hope you are having a "blessed sabbath"!

Hi Mary, and thank you for your kind note. I think that this site is an answer to prayer! My Mother in law has RH too. How are you coping with the pain and emotions that go along with a chronic illness?
